Who are we?

We are an active bible-based church of around 60-70 people, located in the village of Black Dog in rural Mid Devon. Our Sunday services offer a mix of traditional hymns and more modern worship songs as well as sessions for young people and children. We are blessed with a variety of visiting preachers, including our caretaker minister, Rev. Paul Smith.

We hold regular events in our community such as youth and holiday clubs and monthly community meals (Fourth Friday Feast) as well as celebrations such as Harvest Suppers, seasonal coffee mornings (Cuppa Chat) and of course Carols and Mince Pies at Christmas!

If you’re just visiting or are local to the area, we would love to see you at one of our services.

Our weekly, Sunday services are held at 11:00am for approximately an hour. We usually all start in the main church together for some worship and an ‘all age’ thought before our young people go out to their groups and we continue with times of prayer, more sung worship, Bible readings and a sermon. We currently hold one evening service a month, usually on the first Sunday, at 6:30pm, again for approximately an hour which tends to have a smaller congregation in attendance and is often more traditional.

During the week there are usually home groups meeting to study the Bible and encourage each other plus various youth and community activities.

Meet our staff

Waiting for a new minister.

Youth and Children

At Hele Lane we whole-heartedly welcome children and young people. They are welcome to stay in the service or join one of the Junior Church classes that take part in various locations around the church after around 15 to 20 minutes joining in with the main service. All Junior Church teachers have been through enhanced DBS checks and undertake regular safeguarding and first aid training so they really are in safe hands.

Babies are very welcome in the service, but should parents wish to take them out, we have a crèche available every Sunday.

Pre-school aged children can join Bubbles, where they hear stories from the Bible and do craft, activities and play games related to the story.

Splash and Grid

Splash and The Grid are the two classes for Primary school aged children. Children in these groups will do all sorts of activities, games and crafts as they start to explore the Bible and learn about Jesus’ love for them.

The Shed

Young people of Secondary school age are welcome to join our teenagers in The Shed where they will study God’s word with a focus on life application. The topics discussed are very varied, often taking some bizarre tangents and usually accompanied by much laughter and of course biscuits!
